I chose shards of granite
as metaphor for not only “star stuff” but also the
tectonic forces which created the granite. So, out
of this never ceasing and ever changing divine energy
amassed man. The metaphor of bronze as flesh refers
to this divine energy achieving the complexity of man,
conscious of itself and its co-creative abilities,
thinking and then manifesting those thoughts to create
its own reality. So in literal terms, I as man, co-creator,
artist, co-created Adam from the raw divine energy
of the natural elements, copper, tin and made an alloy
called bronze and formed it to its shape through thought
and toil-manifestation.
This work also reflects my aesthetic
and how it relates to the contemporary. If the shards
of granite and bronze are separated, each could be
considered a piece of sculpture, an abstract modern
piece and a traditional classical piece. This expresses
my Centralist view that modern art today has burned
its bridges by pu-puing the
traditional and classical as passé! I think an artist
should be knowledgeable of the past accumulation of
art and then from that well, spring forth into the
now!
